The 1979 World Championship was the 11th ever. The tournament was attended by four teams and was held in the cities of Vänersborg, Trollhättan, Gothenburg, Kungälv, Köping, Uppsala, Katrineholm, Stockholm and Eskilstuna in Sweden during the period 27 January- 4 February.

The championship was won by the defending World Champion USSR ahead of the host country Sweden with Finland in third place. It was USSR’s 11th title in a row and USSR had won all the tournaments until then.
