Hamar, Norway, 2-7 February

This was the 18th World Championship ever. The tournament was held in Hamar’s Vikingship. A year later, 1994, it served as the scene for the 1994 Winter Olympics, then it was awarded Olympic hall status. There were eight participating countries; Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, USA, Canada, Hungary and the Netherlands. The teams were divided into two starting groups based on their level.

The teams played a simple series in their group. The top three in Group A went straight to the semi finals and the 4th placed qualified for entry with the winner of Group B. In the early stages the play time was 2 × 30 minutes.

Sweden and Russia faced off in the final. Sweden won a great victory by 8-0. For Russia, the final loss was historically high. The country had never lost a game by this many goals. Norway managed to win bronze medal in its home race when it defeated Finland by 5-3 in the bronze game. Norway had won its previous medal in the 1963 World Championships.

The World Championship had a total of 18,700 spectators, just under 1,000 spectators per match. The final game Sweden-Russia had 5,338 spectators in the Hamar arena.
