IT STARTED IN 1957 WHEN THIS USSR TEAM WON THE FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP…

A lot of bandyfans around the globe have been waiting since 2019 for a new World Championship with the best teams in the world. Now is the time for a new championship. But among the best teams we still are waiting for Russia. Being out of competition is a consequence of the war in Ukraine for both Russia and Belarus.

The Swedish Bandy Federation (SBF) hosted the 2023 FIB World Championships in Åby, Växjö. The World Championship for Group A has been on hold since 2019 when Russia won the final against Sweden. That tournament was held in Vänersborg, Sweden.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OVER THE YEARS!

THIS IS ÅBY AND VÄXJÖ

Växjö is a town in southern part of Sweden, as well as a residential town for Kronoberg County. Åby, where the indoor arena is situated, is a small village with only 500 inhabitants. Växjö received city rights in year 1342.

The Växjö countryside has had a resident population at least since the younger Stone Age 4100-1700 BC. The fact that roads from five different directions radiated together at the northern tip of Växjö Lake has been crucial to the development of Växjö in this location. 93 020 people live in the city of Växjö and 500 in little Ã…by. The “Eriksson Arena” was built in 2019.
